There is a rumour currently doing the rounds and we at RHS are not sure how to feel about it.
The rumour goes that we could be seeing a reboot of the beloved horror franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street and that directing duties may fall to French director, Alexandre Aja.
Aja is of course no stranger to remaking horror movies, having already delivered re-imaginings of Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes and Joe Dante’s Piranha.
The problem with this rumour is twofold. Firstly, we have already had an Elm Street remake with Samuel Bayer’s god awful attempt. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), starred Jackie Earle Haley as deceased, child murderer, Fred Krueger and was a bomb with critics and fans alike.
Secondly, Aja does have some great movies under his belt. Switchblade Romance (2003), the aforementioned The Hills Have Eyes (2006) and this years excellent creature feature, Crawl (2019), being fine examples. He has also made some clunkers such as,Piranha 3D (2010) and Mirrors (2008).
The Original dream demon, Robert Englund has gone on record recently, stating that he feels he has one more turn as Freddy left in him. If this is true. If he is indeed brought on board and Aja was to make the film while firing on all cylinders, it could indeed be great.
It could however be that the New Line are eyeing up a new franchise, in which case they would most likely opt for a younger actor to take up the razor glove. The problem there is that Englund has left such an indelible imprint as Freddy that it may be impossible for fans to accept anyone else in the role.
This is all speculation at this point as no deals have been made but we will be keeping our beady eyes peeled for any further developments.
